Since 1908, when 15,000 women marched in New York for the right to vote, International Women’s Day has shone the spotlight on gender equality in every aspect of life. Today, its message is just as relevant, especially in sectors such as the automotive industry, which has been perceived as a predominantly male environment. In recent years, women have taken on high-powered roles within the sector, bringing a new and fresh dynamic to the workplace. As our blog mini-series draws to a close, we sat down with Laura Valat, Head of Digital & Marketing at Inchcape Belux, to talk about her experiences as a woman within the automotive industry and learn more about #AccelerateAction, the theme for International Women’s Day 2025.

Can you tell us about your journey in the automotive sector so far? Did you face any stereotypes, and how did you overcome them?
I recently joined the automotive industry after working in telecom and cosmetics. Given the industry’s traditional image, I expected some differences from the environments I encountered in the cosmetics and telecom industries. To be fair, I did initially think it would be harder for a woman in what is perceived as a traditionally male environment.
However, I was very pleasantly surprised. I haven’t encountered significant gender challenges beyond those that exist in other sectors. Occasionally, I’ve heard a light-hearted comment about certain tasks being “better suited” for a woman, but it never went further than that. Ultimately, I believe expertise, attitude, and results matter more than gender.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2025 is #AccelerateAction. What does mean to you? How has the workplace changed for women over the years and what more can be done to support women in leadership roles and achieve gender equality?
For me, #AccelerateAction is about moving beyond discussions and catchy slogans and ensuring real change happens. The automotive industry is a great example of the concept in action. It’s evolved, and there are more women in leadership positions than ever before, challenging traditionally held beliefs and showing how all genders can contribute something worthwhile to every sector. Diversity initiatives are gaining traction, and there’s a growing recognition of the importance of a healthy work-life balance for all genders.
However, real equality isn’t just about hiring more women. It’s about creating an environment where they can truly thrive. One challenge I’ve noticed is that women often hesitate to put themselves forward for promotions. As colleagues and leaders, we should actively encourage and support them to take those opportunities with confidence.
Was there a particular mentor or role model who influenced your career path?
Yes, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors – both men and women – who have guided me along the way. At Inchcape, I was mentored by a fellow female colleague who provided incredible support. She valued my input, challenged me to step up, and gave me opportunities beyond my comfort zone. Having someone who believes in you and pushes you forward makes a huge difference. That’s why I am a strong advocate for mentorship, especially for women. It accelerates growth, builds confidence, and helps break down barriers. And these are exactly the motivation behind the #AccelerateAction theme.
Wellbeing is a priority for everyone in the modern workplace. Can you share personal advice and strategies on balancing work, personal priorities, while maintaining well-being?
Work/life balance is a challenge for everyone, but I find it especially difficult because, like many women, I sometimes feel the need to prove my worth by always doing more than I need to. Saying “no” doesn’t always come easily! However, there are a few things that help me to redress the balance. Firstly – and this may be controversial – I believe in letting go of perfection. While you should always strive to do your best, everything doesn’t have to be flawless, and that’s okay.
Secondly, it’s crucial to prioritize. Not everything needs to be done right now or even today. I focus on what truly matters. Part of that process is also the art of delegation. Trust your team and colleagues, and try not to handle everything yourself. That in itself is a game-changer. Set boundaries. It’s important to disconnect from work after hours. The culture of being ‘on call’ 24/7 destroys a truly healthy work/life balance. You need time to be fully present with your family and ensure you have a personal life.
Finally, put aside some time for self-care. It might seem like a 21st-century buzz phrase, but it really does matter. Whether it’s exercise, relaxation, or hobbies, making time for myself keeps me balanced and energized. It’s not always perfect, but balance is about making intentional choices every day.
What advice would you give to women just starting their careers, especially those aspiring to leadership roles?
Those first steps are always the most exciting, challenging, and difficult. But believing in yourself and being confident in your abilities is essential. You have a right to be in your position. Remember, you belong in every room you walk into.
Don’t hesitate to ask for help. If you’re new in a role, it can be seen as admitting weakness to say you need help. But it’s essential to remember that seeking guidance is a strength, not a weakness. One of the best ways of doing that is to find mentors and allies who can become your support system. They’re not there to ‘take up the slack’ but to inspire and motivate you, as well as provide you with the wisdom of their own experience.
Mentors will also tell you this one thing – keep learning! Stay curious, develop new skills and embrace challenges. If you’re offered a chance to try something new, even if it takes you outside your comfort zone, seize the opportunity with both hands. This is the essence of #AccelerateAction, but it’s as much up to you as it is to those around you to make it happen.
My final piece of advice is to take up space. Don’t hide in the shadows or just sit back and wait for opportunities to come to you – go after them!
We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Laura Valat for her uplifting words, especially at this enriching time for women in the industry. #AccelerateAction isn’t just applicable for a single day—it’s a concept that lays a solid foundation for true equality for everyone. Her words are a true representation of how Inchcape embraces the ethos of motivational advancement and workplace equality for all genders. Laura is based in Brussels, Belgium.
